I wish I could just: have a good rest / get some quiet time / recharge my batteries / catch up on sleep / take time out.
Do these sound familiar?
Are they often on your mind because you wish you had more of? Whether it is a short getaway, a long break or simply taking time off at home, relaxation and rejuvenation is exactly what the doctor ordered. From going on a holiday to making the most of a staycation, there are so many benefits to taking time out than what meets the eye. Here are a few examples!
Improve Mental Health and Wellbeing
With the constant pressures of life today such as work and other responsibilities, this can take a huge toll on our bodies where we become physically, mentally and even emotionally drained. Although stress is an inevitable part of life, it is also important to know when to draw the line. By taking time out, this allows our bodies a chance to relax and rejuvenate. From travelling interstate or abroad to indulging in a staycation, taking time out can range from trying new experiences and meeting new people to putting time aside to finally enjoy that hobby of yours. This could be reading, yoga or snuggling with your beloved pet which I can personally vouch for!
Detoxify Your Body
Another great part about taking holidays/staycations is the endless opportunities to immerse your body in sea water! Although I may be a bit biased here because of my infinite love for the ocean, salt water is known to have a detoxifying effect on our bodies as it draws out impurities and leaves you feeling clean and rejuvenated. In addition to the benefits of salt water, there is also something special about the ocean. Instead of dealing with the stress of our daily lives which can be seen as swimming against the current, moving effortlessly and in sync with the natural flow of the ocean promotes positive mental health and wellbeing.
If you are making the most of a staycation at home, why not create your own version of the ocean by taking time out to soak in a bath with Epsom salts. Add a few candles for dim lighting, close your eyes, and let yourself drift off to a world of relaxation while also detoxifying your body at the same time. Now doesn’t that sound perfect!
Get Quality Sleep
How often do you hear people wishing they had more sleep? Or are you deprived of sleep yourself? Holidays and staycations provide the perfect opportunity to catch up on the much deserved quality sleep that we all need. While we are asleep, our bodies are busy repairing and renewing to restore our levels of energy. It is also the time when our brains are recharging so that we can function more effectively the next day.
Personal tip: Holiday or staycation, my personal must for a deep quality sleep are silk pillow cases. Once you go silk, you can never go back!
Make exercise fun
While some people schedule in routine exercise sessions at the gym, others want to exercise but dread the idea of committing to it. This is where a holiday/staycation can help because it provides the best opportunity to think outside the box of your normal exercise routine! By incorporating exercise into your holidays, this can definitely make exercise more enjoyable and fun. Why not be creative and take the opportunity to explore your surroundings by walking or cycling? Or exercise while also taking in the beauty of your new surroundings, a personal favourite of mine.
One of the best things about going on a staycation is the chance to make the most of the great places available right in your backyard such as going to your local beach for a swim in the beautiful ocean or joining a social group of likeminded people for bushwalking.
Ever wondered why we are entitled to annual leave in the workplace? This is because even the Australian Fair Work Ombudsman recognises the importance of work life balance. We are only human after all! By going on a holiday/staycation, we are more likely to experience lower levels of job stress and burnouts in life. Yes you may feel post-holiday blues, but you will also remember how natural it was to return back to work feeling refreshed and ready to tackle any challenges after having recharged your battery. So the next time you’re thinking of applying for annual leave, don’t hold back because not only are holidays/staycations good for you, it is also good for the workplace!
Isn’t this what we all ultimately want in life? Going on a holiday/staycation is a great escape from the busy buzz of everyday life but the memories that are created from them are everlasting. These memories often evoke feelings of joy as they are the times you consciously decided to take time out as way to shower yourself with TLC. Whether it is pampering yourself at home or experiencing new things and meeting new people in a different country, thinking back on these memories have a relaxing effect on the mind and soul.
