Santo Island, Vanuatu

23.10.2018

Bright blue waters, luscious jungle, adventure and some truly unique experiences awaits in Vanuatu. Just a 3 hour plane ride from Sydney, the absolute paradise of Vanuatu will be a holiday you won't be forgetting anytime soon.

Here is your guide for the perfect Vanuatu trip.

How to get there?

Elsyan Travel - www.elysiantravel.com.au

I have never found a travel agent that gets me as much as Elysian Travel has. I had over 10+ flights on my most recent trip from Australia to Vanuatu to Hawaii. Arranging them myself seemed like an impossible feat but with the help of Ryan, everything went so smoothly.

The level of service that Elysian provides is way above the rest; they are fast, friendly, efficient and most of all, completely reliable. Last minute flight additions or changes was seamlessly through their concierge services and they have surpassed all my expectations for a travel agent. I highly recommend them to anyone who wants a stress and drama free trip. Especially for people who have any sort of connecting flights.

Where to stay?

Sails Beach House - www.sailsbeachhouse.com

Sails beach house is located in a hidden gem, Aore island, a 30 to 40 minute boat ride from Santo Island. It has everything you want, and more. When I first went through the door, I was awestruck at how beautiful the place is. The photos on their website do not do it the justice it deserves. The house is massive! There are three spacious rooms and three bathrooms. The kitchen is also completely decked out. The outdoor area has the most cozy hammocks, and even a bbq area! And when I opened the fridge, there was even a bottle of champagne for us!

Before we had even arrived, Nellie, the owner gave us such thorough information and great tips, to the extent that we felt like we were locals. Unlike many airbnb accomodations, Nellie provided a comprehensive compendium and even personally messaged us to see if everything was okay. She is just an absolute sweetheart and a wonderful host.

The caretaker, George, arranged all of our transport, cleaning, and cooking. You name it. Anything you need, he can do it. George went above and beyond in providing an amazing level of service.

Sails grounds are breath taking. There is a beach (with a swing!) as well as a swimming lagoon at the back of the house. We were told that you would be able to see dugongs and turtles bob their heads if the tide is high enough! Sails provides snorkeling gear for your underwater exploration of Aore.

Nellie - Thank you so much for making this whole trip magical, in every way possible. We fallen in love with Sails Beach House and all there is about Santo! I highly recommend Sails to anyone who is thinking of visiting Vanuatu, it is not only a house, it comes with a whole new experience. Come as a couple, a family, even a group of friends. Sails Beach House cates to all.

How to get around?

The Espiritu - www.the-espiritu.com

We hired a car from The Espiritu for a week and have nothing but good things to say about the company. Simon was an absolute gem and made everything run smoothly.

He recommended places to visit, routes to take and tour companies to follow. A very accomodating and friendly guy. He even chucked in some snorkelling gear for us.

Driving in Santo is a whole different jam than Australia. The car's have manual transmission and a left-hand drive, so take that into consideration prior to booking. Having access to a car is significantly more convenient and much nicer than going on and off random taxis, not to mention safer. The car we hired has all the necessities; a big boot, air conditioning and extremely fuel efficiency, which is great as there are only two fuel stops across Santo.

Interesting Activities

Matevulu Blue Hole with Island Time Kayaking Tour - www.islandtimekayaking.net

Our trip started from The Bay of Islands where we were welcomed with an amazing view of an archipelago of Islands. They continue on towards a mangrove river that connects to a crystal river, that leads to the unforgettable Matevulu Blue Hole.

The views are out of this world. The water has so many beautiful shades of blue! Free diving in the Matevulu Blue Hole alongside Alex, and my friends, was so fun and relaxing at the same time. What an amazing experience.

Before you set off on this tour hydrate properly, eat up, get sufficient sleep and bring your own water. It is a long action packed day. However, our tour guide, Alex is so friendly and understanding throughout the whole trip and kept tabs on me the whole time and was super encouraging.

Also, did I mention that there are no crocodiles or dangerous animals around? So the whole trip was absolutely perfect. Don’t forget mosquito repellent as you would be going through a jungle! I highly recommend this tour to anyone looking for an incredible Vanuatu adventure.

Coconut Crab

Located south of the Island, you'll find many restaurants near the beach that sell Coconut Crab. The meat is very sweet and delicious!
